A Different Kind of Mother's Day Message - Ackroyd's Scottish Bakery

A Different Kind of Mother's Day Message

As many of you know, Mother's Day is next weekend. This is a day set aside to celebrate Moms, Grandmas, and anyone else who may play the role of "mother."

It is also a difficult time for some. I lost my mother to cancer back in 2008. I was 27 at the time and was starting to form a truly special relationship with her. One that involved talking on the phone nearly everyday and sharing stories of our workdays while I was stuck in my awful nightly commute home. This was before I started at Ackroyd's, of course.

The cancer diagnosis was a shock. No one in my family had ever been diagnosed, let alone at age 48. She fought valiantly for 18 months before succumbing at the young age of 50. Every Mother's Day I reflect on my fond memories of her, so the day is bittersweet.

There are also plenty of people out there who have difficult or maybe even nonexistent relationships with their moms or dads. That's OK, too. Our lives are complicated and no one should tell you how to navigate your relationships, especially not a bakery trying to sell you scones.

Megan, the bakery's 3rd generation owner, is a mom. She tries her best every day to lead our business and be phyiscally and emotionally present with our son. She is exemplary in her roles. Some days may be more stressful than others, but Megan tries her best everyday.

To all of the moms out there doing their best, we salute you.
